FAIRY FRUITS AND FLOWERS

Dear _____,

How little our lives intertwine! Daily my Heart grows sadder; from April's garden I mourn my fate in wintry solitude. My feeble efforts have been all in vain, mortifying and pathetic attempts to drum up a conversation, sending half a dozen roses, three red and three yellow, oh how should I ever forget! A million should have done as little good. Nothing has served to break your icy barrier.

Perhaps I am dull, it is true that I do nothing, say nothing, spending my time in idleness. Likewise, it is true that I am weak, a bit effeminate, and very unsure of myself, but I need you. Oh God if you only knew how much I need you! I need you like cornbread needs molasses. I need you like a paraplegic needs a crutch.

Our Life together should be like a richly embroidered carpet. We should while away a lazy summer's afternoon, strolling through gentle, dew-laden pastures, listening to the mellifluous strains of cow bells. Ah dream too bright to last! Ah starry hope that didst arise, to be overcast!

Thou was all to me, Love
For which my soul did pine
A green isle in the sea, Love
a fountain and a shrine
All Wreathed with fairy fruits and flowers
and all the flowers were mine!

No I am not the handsomest, nor the most intelligent or talented, nor am I the most deserving of your affection of those who have courted you. But I would cherish you beyond all the others, if you could only let me.

I can no longer bear this pain with which you have afflicted me. Tell me if you care for me. I await your answer on bended knee.

Anticipatingly, _____
